Entitled Ghost Days, it reunites him with singer Brigitte Beraha and saxophonist Tori Freestone, and introduces a new, all-star UK rhythm team of Rick Simpson piano Tom Farmer bass and Andrew Bain drums.
Each piece had a poem as its starting point, defining the overall mood and the rhythm and phrasing of the melody, and the emotional message of the lyrics is beautifully delivered by Beraha to create a unity of atmosphere throughout the album.
A Pennsylvania native, Andre first developed his career in New York where he worked with artists such as Maria Schneider, Becca Stevens, Donny McCaslin, Kate McGarry, Ingrid Jensen and Darcy James Argue, and this album is full of the kind of innovative cross-genre exploration for which those artists are renowned.
Beraha then develops it into an astonishing improvisation that builds and builds in intensity, switching from fragments of lyrics into pure wordless extemporisation over a driving rock beat.
All the vocal-based material was toured by the band extensively before they went into the studio: the sureness with which they deliver the arrangements is testament to how thoroughly each musician assimilated the concept.
For the last track, however, Canniere wanted to try something different: an exercise in classic-era jazz spontaneity, with the arrangement brought fresh into the studio and recorded in a single take.

Carter is widely considered the finest jazz violinist of her generation, a hardācharging soloist whose precisely focused tone and graceful way with a ballad hint at her long years of classical training.
Fastāforward to 2004, when Wynton Marsalis offered Sean the position as lead trumpeter in the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, a position he held for six years.
In that same year, Sean Jones released his disc debut Eternal Journey Mack Avenue ; he and his bands have since released a total of eight albums including their latest, Live From Jazz At The Bistro 2017.
In 2011, he was selected by Marcus Miller, Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter for their internaĀtional Tribute to Miles tour.
As a leader, Brookmeyer released albums on Prestige, World Pacific, Mercury, Hiring philippines 2020, and United Artists including The Ivory Hunters, an LP of piano duets with Bill Evans.

Alongside early music energy from Joglaresa and La Serenissima, and a first visit from charismatic guitarist Sean Shibe, we spend an afternoon celebrating the great Victorian musician, polymath and populariser of the limerick Edward Lear.
Look out for a special weekend of science and discovery in March with guests David Owen Norris and James Mayhew, and the music of Mozart, and Holst, his ever popular The Planets, on the menu.

Details of the winners in all ten categories are attached.
Organised by the All Party Parliamentary Jazz Appreciation Group APPJAGand presented at the PizzaExpress Live in Holborn, the awards presenters included British politicians and UK musicians including APPJAG co-chair Kelvin Hopkins and jazz industry figures Jon Newey, Deirdre Cartwright, Danielle White, Steve Crocker, Simon Cooke, Gary Crosby OBE, Kevin Le Gendre and Baroness Coussins.
The Parliamentary Jazz Awards are organised by the All Party Parliamentary Jazz Appreciation Group APPJAG at the Houses of Parliament in London.
The group consists of over a hundred members drawn from across the UK political parties.
The awards were the brainchild Bob Blizzard Waveney MPa long-time enthusiast of the jazz genre who was concerned that there was a lack of national recognition for the work of jazz performers and venues across the UK.
I am indebted to many people for helping to make the Jazzmann site a success, particularly my wife Pam for allowing me to indulge my passion for music and jazz in particular, and who has acted as the driver to countless gigs up and down the country.
Sometimes I think we clock up nearly as many miles as the musicians.
Without these two guys there would be no Jazzmann.

In July 2018, Maria Schneider was awarded the highest honor in jazz, as a recipient of the 2019 Jazz Masters Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts.
In late August of this year, Schneider and the orchestra began recording a new album entitled Data Lords.
Amidst the noise and the clamoring, it now requires great effort for us to take real breaks from the digital world so that we can fully access the organic world that sustains us.

This project pays tribute to these fine artists, and to the cultural and musical contributions from the diaspora: the Modern Ancestors who left behind a legacy and defined the sound and spirit of Jazz, the music of our time and all times.

By 1955, he had become a major composer, indeed, a creative force influencing the development of jazz.

He has long had an interest in jazz, performing at a John Coltrane tribute concert at the Barbican and in 2004 releasing Set One: You Go To My Head, a selection of Cassandra Wilson and Betty Carter-inspired standards.
In 2016 he recorded the Alex Webb composition Me And My Crazy Ideas for the album Call Me Lucky by Alex Webb and the Copasetics and is currently preparing a new album with Webb for release in autumn 2019.

About David Gaydon Gaydon was solely responsible for putting the Roundhouse firmly on the international live music map as a highly respected, much in-demand venue, continuing the musical legacy that The Roundhouse has been growing since first becoming a performance space in the late 1960s.
Managing the legendary BBC Electric Proms for five years, Gaydon also brought in the 30-day iTunes Festival and Mercury Awards as well as multiple festivals including Short Circuit festival of Electronica, the award winning Reverb Festival of contemporary classical music, Turning Point festival showcasing the positive voice of young people and Roundhouse Rising emerging music festival.

In the spring of 2019, Skonberg joined the Monterey Jazz Festival On Tour for a series of 26 concerts in 16 states and Canada, sharing the stage with such nextāgeneration jazz peers as singer CĆ©cile McLorin Salvant, saxophonist Melissa Aldana, and pianist Christian Sands.
This Jazz Standard engagement celebrates a muchāanticipated new album by this multiātalented musician.
He caught the ferocity of a Baptist church, its call and response, its canons, its rippling rhythms as the congregation strove for rough unison of individuals rather than unanimity.
He remade these ingrediĀents into improvised intensity.
Together, Abassi and Olivier have built on their successful duet performances by adding two gifted percussionists, Sameer Gupta tabla and Michael Sarin drumsfor what promises to be an exceptional and exciting evening of unclassifiable musical creativity.

The initiatives include swathes of BBC Radio 3 content including a 6 hour overnight jazz takeover, a jazz collection on BBC Sounds, a partnership with Jazz FM which will see BBC Radio 3 and BBC Sounds broadcast Jazz FM content for the first time and Jazz FM to share key recordings from BBC Radio 3.
There will also be a new jazz programme focussing on the emerging scene presented by composer and arranger Corey Mwamba, and high profile artist portraits on television including a seminal new feature documentary on Miles Davis by Stanley Nelson for BBC Two.
The programme will be presented by Derby-based vibraphone player and composer Corey Mwamba and will appear on Saturday nights from the 2nd November.
BBC Radio 3 will also be joining forces with Bauer Media for the first time in a unique partnership between commercial radio and public service.
Shared content will appear on both BBC Radio 3 and BBC Sounds, and whilst the two stations have collaborated before with a digital pop-up BBC Music Jazz, this will be the first time BBC Radio 3 will be broadcasting content from Jazz FM on the network, with Jazz FM similarly sharing Radio 3 content from recorded concerts with their audiences in a reciprocal deal.
BBC Radio 2 will cover the London Jazz Festival through The Jamie Cullum Jazz Show, inviting a range of live jazz festival guests to perform on the programme.
BBC Two and BBC Four will also schedule a number of high profile new television documentaries this autumn.
Highlights include a seminal programme on Miles Davis by Stanley Nelson with a London Jazz Festival screening on 16th November 2019.
The programme features unseen archive and contributions from greats like Herbie Hancock, Quincy Jones and Wayne Shorter amongst others.
There will also be a BBC Four film on Bluenote by Sophie Huber.

ABOUT EDINBURGH JAZZ AND BLUES FESTIVAL Edinburgh Jazz Festival was established in 1978 by banjo-player and guitarist, Mike Hart.

A Princes Street parade was launched and free events in the Grassmarket and Princes Street Gardens.

Chris Barber retires after 65 years as a top band leader and pioneer of blues in Britain.
Sunday, August 18, 2019 We have received the following press release; CHRIS BARBER RETIRES AFTER 65 YEARS AS A TOP BANDLEADER AND PIONEER OF BLUES IN BRITAIN The Big Chris Barber Band will carry on as a tribute to his rich musical legacy.
His original small group initially played in jazz clubs but by the late 50s became an attraction in large concert halls throughout the UK and Europe.
In fact, Barber led a band for more years than his hero Duke Ellington, who achieved a mere half-century!
Now that Chris has retired, The Big Chris Barber Band will carry on as a tribute to his rich musical legacy.
Born in Welwyn, Hertfordshire in 1930, Chris became an avid collector of jazz and blues records before buying his first trombone at age 18 and formed a semi-professional band in 1949 when he recorded for the first time.
He studied trombone and double-bass at the Guildhall School of Music and assembled his first professional band in 1953, fronted by trumpeter Ken Colyer.
Colyer was replaced by Pat Halcox in 1954 who remained with Barber for 54 years.
The powerful blues singer Ottilie Patterson, who later married Chris, starred with his band for 20 years.
The band recorded prolifically over the years in its many forms with numerous special guests.
Barber was awarded the OBE in 1991.
His autobiography Jazz Me Blues, co-written with Alyn Shipton, appeared in 2014.
Nobody has done more to shape the musical scene that I am part of than Chris.
I was lucky enough to tour as a guest with Chris and his great band.
I will continue to tell people about the importance of his musical footprint.
His role in inspiring the world-beating British groups of the 1960s cannot be overestimated.
Ever since those early days he has always been a good and supportive friend to me and his legion of fans.
I was sorry to hear that he is retiring from live performances and I sincerely wish him well.
We will miss him entertaining us with his unique trombone playing and leadership.
An inspiration and a role-model; thank you, Chris!
It is very sad to hear that he is retiring from live performances which he continued to give with energy and panache until well into his ninth decade.
He achieved great success and popularity during his long career but few of his stature have had such an influence on the development of British music across so many styles and generations.

I certainly have had a very stagnated career since focusing on the SNJO from 1995 to present, Spartacus Records in 2000, my youth orchestra from 2002, the Scottish Jazz Federation, the RCS jazz programme in 2009, and its adjacent Summer jazz school.
Soon, I hope to spend more time on my own career writing, practising and touring.
All I ever imagined, as a young player, was to excel in a small quartet, trio or duo.
I never wished to start a National orchestra nor develop a University Jazz programme, but Scotland was in dire need of them - and as I saw every country on the planet flourish with those elements we lacked whilst touring internationally with Gary Burton.
Somebody, me, had to stick their career on the line and get their hands mucky to begin the long wait and develop the basics, that was sorely neglected.
Although, many have already left Scotland.
Finding and hooking up with international agents, while working in Scotland, is like trying to find a Dodo or a Tasmanian Tiger.
Hopefully, as we live through this new digital age, the zeros and ones will assist this new generation of Scottish improvisers to circumnavigate any barriers that confront them.
On Tuesday, at Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh, I am to be presented with my official OBE by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II as Head of Jazz at the RCS and Artistic Director of the SNJO for services to Education and Jazz Music.
It will be a wonderful day for my family and me.
Truthfully, my heart is here in Scotland but for the community of improvising musicians to be equals on the World stage, the European stage, we still have a long way to go.
So raise a glass, and toast to the 2nd Enlightenment!
Perhaps my solo career needs to wait a little longer.

Wednesday, June 26, 2019 The Royal Academy of Music announces the ninth recipient of the Kenny Wheeler Jazz Prize The Royal Academy of Music and Edition Records are pleased to announce that the 2019 winner of the ninth Kenny Wheeler Jazz Prize is the talented saxophonist and composer, Alexander Bone.
The Kenny Wheeler Jazz Prize is awarded each year to a young artist who demonstrates excellence in both performance and composition, and is selected from all graduating jazz musicians at the Royal Academy of Music, London.
The added quality, which was decisive in his winning the prize, is his keen sense of how to project all these skills.
He had not just assembled some like-minded and very gifted players to run through his charts, he seemed to have inspired them to share his vision for how a band can communicate, firstly amongst themselves, but by doing this to generate real involvement from the audience.
The skill, command and facility they have as players is inspiring, and compositionally they are armed with a vast ability to write for both large and small ensembles with originality and vibrancy.
Alexander Bone is a musician that exudes all these qualities in bucket loads, is energetically confident yet humble and engaging.
We are looking forward to working with him in developing his career, which has already seen him win awards and acclaim.
To collaborate with him on his debut and to consolidate the praise he has earned, will be a joy.
Most recently he performed as part of the 2018 Young Musician Prom at the Royal Albert Hall alongside the BBC Concert Orchestra.

Monday, June 17, 2019 We have received the following press release; The National Youth Jazz Orchestra launches the NYJO Jazz Exchange: Young musicians to take charge of their artistic voice Today, NYJO announces the most exciting development in its 54-year history: the NYJO Jazz Exchange, a two-year national project encouraging young professional musicians to take charge of their artistic voice.
Launching in January 2020, the NYJO Jazz Exchange will empower ten musicians to identify their creative needs and drive their own professional careers.
They will be supported by world-class mentorship, regular rehearsals, paid performances and masterclasses.
Recruitment will welcome both nominated and self-nominated applicants, with particular focus on regions outside London.
NYJO will work closely with the jazz community to identify suitable applicants.
The first ensemble will be coached by award-winning instrumentalist, Orphy Robinson MBE.
Orphy works in a variety of forms including jazz, free improvisation and funk, and has a long-standing association with classical violinist Nigel Kennedy.
As a young player, I would have benefited enormously from this scheme.

Principal Horn in the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra at age 19, Schuller had discovered Duke Ellington as a teenager and pronounced jazz as important as classical music.
Named President of the Conservatory in 1967, he moved quickly to incorporate jazz into the curriculum.
By September 1969, he had gotten his unprecedented program approved by the National Association of Schools of Music and began offering classes.
Closely allied to the Jazz Studies program was his Third Stream department, which came along a few years later and which linked classical and jazz into a new genre.
The first department chair was saxophonist Carl Atkins.
Composer and NEA Jazz Master George Russell, who conceived the Lydian Chromatic Concept which has importantly influenced jazz greats from Miles Davis to Maria Schneiderbegan a Conservatory association that continued for 35 years.
And Ran Blake, who Schuller had discovered pushing a broom at Atlantic Records, came to NEC in 1968 and became the first chair of the Third Stream Department in 1972.
During the early years of jazz at NEC, Atkins formed a trio composed of Donald Pate on bass, Harvey Mason on drums, and Ron Fransen on piano.
With Atkins as saxophonist and coach, the group toured jazz festivals recruiting students and attracting national attention to the new NEC program.
Among the earliest students to enroll were Stanton Davis and Ricky Ford.
By the time Schuller retired as President of NEC in 1977, the list of jazz graduates was already impressive.
They included Anthony Coleman who has returned to teach at NECMarty Ehrlich, Fred Hersch, Jerome Harris, Michael Moore, and Bo Winiker.
Vocalist Dominique Eade, who graduated in 1984, became the first jazz performer to receive an NEC Artist Diploma in 1989, joining the faculty and becoming a magnet for gifted young vocalists such as Kris Adams, Rachael Price, Luciana Souza, Sara Serpa, Lisa Thorson and Patrice Williamson.
In addition, Schuller, Brookmeyer, Russell, and Ron Carter have all been named NEA Jazz Masters.

A highlight performance will be on May 31 when the Legacy Messenger Band will perform at the Terrace Theater at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC.
In October, Onyx Productions released the I Remember Bu: Alive Vol.
Both albums received widespread international attention and resulted in features in Downbeat Magazine and Jazziz Magazine, among others.

I am raising funds for my husband, Kenny Burrell.
He is a legendary jazz guitarist who has contributed much to the world of music.
Following his 85th birthday concert at Royce Hall, he suffered an accident that led to a two year medical leave.
He is still in recovery, on sabbatical, and writing his autobiography, as well as two other books.
I am taking care of Kenny at home.
His medical expenses exceed our monthly income.
In the process of mismanaging our claim, the bank returned payments I made to creditors, seriously impacting our credit scores.
We are also currently in litigation with our HOA which has been costly, such that I have spent almost all of our savings and life insurance policy.
We are facing foreclosure and consequent homelessness.
We will have to move out of our apartment in the next 1-2 weeks for demolition, which will include mould remediation, lead abatement, and major construction.
None of this will be covered by insurance, and the HOA will pass all of the costs to us.
It is my fervent, heartfelt desire to continue to care for Kenny as he deserves given who he is and all that he has given to the world through his music, and the beautiful spirit from which it emanated.
It saddens and embarrasses me to desperately need and request help, but it is necessary at this point.
If anyone is willing to help us at this time, I would deeply appreciate it, and I will do my best to pay you back in the future.

With A Lousy Day in Harlem, he unleashes his talent-laden ensemble on a gorgeous array of music by Ellington, Monk, Coltrane, Egberto Gismonte, and his own finely wrought originals.
Slated for release on Sky Cat Records, the album captures a master arranger and jazz big band leader at the top of his game, putting his own unmistakable stamp on canonical compositions.
It felt like the right time to show the world another side of the band.
He rechristened the tune as a tribute to its namesake, a dear friend who played lead trumpet in the band for years.
Previous Palermo Big Band releases celebrated such other musical genres as pop, rock and blues, as broadcast by their humorous cover art.
Born in Ocean City, New Jersey on June 14, 1954, Palermo grew up in the cultural orbit of Philadelphia, which was about an hour drive away.
He started playing clarinet in elementary school, and soon turned to the alto saxophone.
He also took up the guitar, and credits his teenage obsession with Zappa to opening his ears to post-bop harmonies and improvisation.
Palermo caught the jazz bug while attending DePaul University, and took to the alto sax with renewed diligence inspired by Phil Woods, Cannonball Adderley, and Edgar Winter the subject of an upcoming EPBB project.
Before he graduated he was leading his own band and making a good living as a studio player recording commercial jingles.
After a year of playing jam sessions and scuffling Palermo landed a coveted gig with Tito Puente, a four-year stint that immersed him in Afro-Cuban music.
As a consummate studio cat and sideman, he toured and recorded with an array of stars, including Aretha Franklin, Eddie Palmieri, Celia Cruz, Lena Horne, Tony Bennett, Mel TormƩ, Lou Rawls, Melba Moore, The Spinners, and many others.
Employed frequently by bass star Christian McBride for a disparate array of projects, Palermo has written arrangements for a James Brown concert at the Hollywood Bowl, a Frank Sinatra tribute featuring Kurt Elling, Seth McFarland, and John Pizzarelli, and a 20-minute medley of Wayne Shortertunes for the New Jersey Ballet.
Palermo had been leading his big band for more than a decade before the Zappa concept started coming together.
Inspired by electric guitar master Mike Keneally, who performed with Zappa on some of his final concerts before his death in 1993, Palermo decided to arrange a program of 12 Zappa tunes.
